Now’s the time to prepare for an active hurricane season.

With major hurricane hazards of high winds, tornados, heavy rainfall and flooding, severe weather can lead to widespread power outages, leaving communities without electricity for days, weeks or longer. These outages can complicate recovery efforts and pose additional risks, making it all the more crucial for individuals and communities to prepare thoroughly for the upcoming hurricane season to help ensure their homes remain a safe haven.

This year may be more important than ever. The 2024 hurricane season is expected to be significantly more active, with forecasts from NOAA and the Colorado State University (CSU) Tropical Meteorology Project predicting not only an increased number of storms, but also more storms reaching major hurricane strength (Category 3 or higher). This follows last year’s record as the fourth most active on record, with 20 named storms, seven reaching hurricane force, and three major hurricanes.
